Top 2019. Seven finalists from Type Journal’s annual Cyrillic type review.
Top 2019 is a special project for Type Journal’s annual review of remarkable Cyrillic typefaces. The wording matters: this is not a claim about the best fonts of the year, but a careful editorial selection of releases that stood out for their character, craft or relevance.
A typeface is difficult to judge from a name, a thumbnail or a short release note. It needs scale, text, rhythm and a little room around it. Top 2019 was built from that simple premise: Type Journal’s annual selection of remarkable Cyrillic typefaces became a dedicated website where seven finalists could be seen as living typographic material.
The challenge was to keep the tone precise. The project was not about declaring winners or ranking the “best” typefaces of the year. It had to preserve the editorial nuance of the original review: these were fonts worth noticing, discussing and studying. At the same time, the website needed to make the selection visually engaging without turning into a decorative showcase.
The result is a focused digital specimen for Type Journal’s 2019 review—clear, atmospheric and careful with the material it presents.
